The WWII Tanks
Flamenco Tank #1
The famous graffiti-covered Sherman tank on Flamenco Beach β Culebra's most iconic photo op. Left behind when the US Navy ended bombing exercises on the island in 2003 after decades of community protests. The tank sits right on the sand near the west end of the beach, painted over with colorful street art that changes every few years. A powerful reminder of Culebra's resistance and reclamation of their land. Walk past the main beach area toward the rocky west end to find it.
Flamenco Tank #2
Second Sherman tank on Flamenco Beach, slightly further east from Tank #1 and closer to the waterline. Same history β abandoned by the US military after Culebra's successful fight to stop the Navy from using their island for target practice. Less photographed than Tank #1 but equally worth seeing. The contrast of rusting military hardware against turquoise Caribbean water tells Culebra's story better than any museum could.
