Culebra is a small island off Puerto Rico's east coast with an outsized reputation: Flamenco's white sand, turtle-filled snorkel coves, beach-bar nights and not a single traffic light. This guide is built from the Todo Culebra live map — 177 local pins maintained by people who actually live here.

🏖️ Beaches
- Sardine BeachClosest beach to the ferry terminal — walk or ride over in minutes. Calm, shallow water great for kids. You can see Héctor El Protector from here. Decent snorkeling along the rocks on the east side with sea fans and juvenile fish. No formal facilities but there are some shaded spots. Bring your own water and snacks. Reef-safe sunscreen only. A perfect quick stop if you just arrived or have time to kill before your ferry.
- Playa BravaPlaya Brava — "Brave Beach" lives up to its name. Wild, rugged, and usually empty — no crowds, no chairs, no services, just raw Atlantic surf crashing into golden sand. Hike in through the hills and you'll feel like you discovered it yourself. 🌊🥾 Not for swimming (strong currents), but epic for photos and solitude. 🚲 E-bikes can make it — advanced riders only, steep & bumpy trail.
- Natural salt water poolsNatural salt-water tide pools on Culebrita's north shore — calm, crystal-clear soaking pools beside the reef (the famous "jacuzzis"). They're ON Isla Culebrita, so the trip is the same boat ride: take a water taxi from Culebra — Gammy's (787-423-2469) or H2O (787-685-5815) — then a short walk from the landing beach. Go ONLY in calm seas; bring water shoes and pack everything out.
- Playa FlamencoWorld-famous #1 beach! WW2 tanks, white sand, crystal water. 🍽 Kioskos at the entrance serve burgers, empanadas, drinks & more. ☂️ Chairs & umbrellas ~$10–15/day. Arrive before 10am for best spots. Sea turtles nest here — give them space!
- La PelaAmazing cays Called La Pela and Pelaita (nice to visit on private boat or kayaking by your own risk (Watch for current and boats near by.
🤿 Snorkeling
- Snorkel: MosquitoPlaya Mosquito — secluded 140m beach on Culebra's southeast coast. Calm, clear water with GREAT snorkeling (reef access right off the beach). Family-friendly, safe for kids; swimming is moderate — check conditions. Parking: small roadside pull-off near the beach access. Best Dec–Apr (dry season); mornings are calmest year-round.
- Ensenada Honda Kayak LaunchCalm, sheltered waters perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Ensenada Honda is Culebra's main harbor — flat water, no waves, and you can paddle out toward the mangroves. Great for beginners or a sunset paddle. Bring your own gear or check with local rental shops.

🥾 Trails, Cays & Adventures
Hikes
- Playa Resaca TrailOnce you park at the top of the hill (a jeep, cart, or e-bike can get up there), the trail is marked with a small ocean buoy hung over a tree branch to the left when entering the trailhead parking area. The trail starts through some grass and then quickly descends 550 vertical feet along the hillside. Definitely wear sneakers and bring water! Once you arrive at the mangrove forest (look for the jueyes crabs), the trail is marked with sea trash to lead you to the beach. It is absolutely beautiful and remote. The only bummer is that there can be plastic and fishing debris — bring a bag to collect some to dispose of. There isn't much shade and the waves can be very big. Overall a fun adventure!
- Playa Brava Trail0.75 mi to wild Playa Brava. Hard — steep downhill, tough return climb. From end of road past museum. Slippery after rain. No swimming (dangerous waves). Great photos.
- Carlos Rosario Trail1.8 mi out-and-back to Carlos Rosario Beach. Best snorkeling on Culebra! Starts at Flamenco parking lot. 15-20 min each way. Moderate — some hills and full sun.
- Flamenco Lagoon TrailEasy flat walk along Flamenco lagoon. Great birding — herons, pelicans, shorebirds. Perfect rainy morning option. 30 min round trip. All fitness levels.
Offshore cays
- CulebritaVirgin-island paradise off Culebra's east side — hike to the historic lighthouse (El Faro), soak in the natural salt-water tide-pool jacuzzis, and look for sea turtles. Reachable ONLY by boat (~15–30 min): book a water taxi with H2O Water Taxi (787-685-5815) or Gammy's Water Taxi (787-423-2469). Best in calm conditions — it's a full half-day trip.
- Cayos GeniquíTiny offshore islet cluster in the northeastern Culebra archipelago — boat-access only. Part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge; important seabird nesting habitat. Snorkel anchorage on calm days.
- Cayo del AguaSmall islet in the Las Hermanas group southwest of Culebra. Within the Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve area. Boat-access only.
