Getting Around Culebra Without a Car

Visitors cross on the ferry on foot, so everyone needs a way to get from the dock to the beaches. Here are the five ways people do it, what each one costs, and where each one can go.

The five ways to get around

Público (shared van)

Cost: about $5 per person each way between the ferry dock and Flamenco (guide-reported).

Best for: one beach, one day. Vans meet the ferries; no booking.

A round trip to Flamenco is about $10 per person.

Taxi

Cost: typically $5–$20 per person, depending on where you go (guide-reported).

Best for: getting to your lodging with luggage, or one fixed trip.

Golf cart

Needs: a driver's licence and a minimum age of 21 or 25, depending on the company. Mandatory insurance is about $15 a day and deposits run $100–$500.

Where: paved roads only; some companies bar carts from Zoni, Resaca, Punta Soldado and Dátiles. Up to 4 seats.

Hours: rental counters close around 5–6 PM, and their ferry shuttles usually carry only the main driver.

Jeep

Needs: a driver's licence and a minimum age of 21 or 25; collision cover about $15 a day and a deposit.

Best for: groups of 5 or more, gear, and rainy days (it has a roof). Supply is limited in high season.

E-bike or e-moped

Needs: no driver's licence for the e-bike; riders 5'0" and up.

Cost: e-bikes from $35 for a half day (4 hours), $42 for 6 hours, $50 for a full day, $70 overnight; 2 or more bikes take 10% off. A $10 deposit reserves online.

Where: paved roads, dirt roads and the sandy approaches. E-bikes park free at Flamenco (vehicles pay the $5 fee).

Hours: the shop is open 7 AM–8 PM, a flat 12-minute walk from the ferry dock, next to Carlos Jeep Rental.

Ferry to Flamenco, step by step

  1. Take the ferry from Ceiba. $2.25 per adult each way; about an hour on the passenger ferry. Park in the Ceiba lot (about $15 a day, free shuttle to the terminal). Vehicles stay on the mainland.
  2. Walk 12 flat minutes to the shop (or take a público straight to the beach).
  3. Pick up your e-bike. Reserve before you board with a $10 deposit, so it is waiting for you. Helmet and phone mount are included.
  4. Ride about 2.5 miles to Flamenco and park free at the beach.
  5. Be back for the boat. Plan to be at the terminal an hour before your return sailing, and return the bike on your way.

Are the hills hard on an e-bike?

Culebra is hilly: the road to Flamenco climbs out of town before it drops to the beach, about 2.5 miles in all, and Zoni is about 4 miles. Our bikes are Class 2 fat-tire e-bikes: pedal assist and a throttle, so you can ride the steepest climbs without pedalling hard. Fat tires keep you steady on the dirt roads and the sand at the beach entrances.
